Das Gegenteil ist offensichtlich “to drop the ball”.
“She had to plan the party all by herself/had to carry the ball but she totally forgot/dropped the ball”.
Die Ausdrucksweise entstammt vermutlich dem Football.

¹ Sometimes A Great Notion (Manchmal ein großes Verlangen) ist der Name einer Novel von Ken Kesey (One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest) und wird trotz geringerer Bekanntheit als sein Meisterwerk angesehen.
Den Namen hat er aus einem traditionellem Folk-Song mit Titel Goodnight, Irene. Da es darin um Selbstmord geht, bezieht sich der Titel der Episode eher auf den Song als auf Keseys berühmtes Buch.
