Es weiß ja sicher jeder, was das Wort “tie” bedeutet, ich fand es in dem Zusammenhang aber doch erwähnenswert, besonders weil ich den anderen Begriff noch nie gehört habe (auch wenn er sich von selbst erklärt).
Anita: Nothing sexier than a man in a fine cravat.
Barney: Except for a woman who appreciates a fine cravat.
Anita: How about we just call it a tie?
Barney (to Police Officer): You see, a cravat is a kind of tie.
Officer: I get it.
Barney: Anyway, next thing you know, I get her back to my place.
to call it a tie – sich auf Unentschieden einigen. In dem Fall eine Doppelbedeutung (viel Spaß an die Übersetzer), da sie ebenfalls meinen, die Krawatte statt dem eher ungewöhnlichen “cravat” einfach “tie” zu nennen, cravat ist ja nur ein Synonym für tie.
Dann gibt es noch den TIE Fighter, der hat aber mit keinem der beiden Bedeutungen was zu tun, TIE ist hier ein Akronym für den nicht sehr einfallsreichen Namen “Twin Ion Engines” (Hätte im Deutschen also ein DIA Kämpfer werden müssen. Wobei “Rasender Falke” ja auch keine sehr wörtliche Übersetzung von “Millennium Falcon” ist).
Ein weiteres Wort, dass ich einfach mal in den gleichen Beitrag packen will, ist doozy.
Ted: Well, if you have to seal the deal in just one date, it’s got to be one doozy of a date, right?
Barney: Yeah.
Ted: I’m not talking dinner and a movie. I’m not talking mini-golf. I’m talking… 17 dates worth of romance wrapped up into one incredible night. I’m talking about… a superdate.

Barney: This, my friends… is The Playbook. The Playbook contains every scam, con, hustle, hoodwink, gambit, flimflam, stratagem and bamboozle I’ve ever used – or ever hope to use – to pick up chicks and give them the business.

hoodwink habe ich von den vielen Begriffen ausgewählt, weil ich da erst verstand, warum der Animationsfilm mit Rotkäpchen (Little Red Riding Hood) eben Hoodwinked heißt.
Die Etymologie ist recht simpel. hood ist eine Haube, Kapuze etc., to wink bedeutet heute “zwinkern”, man findet aber auch einfach “schließen der Augen” als Übersetzung. to hoodwink ist eigentlich das Verbinden der Augen einer Person, bspw. bei einer Hinrichtung. Verbindet man jemandem die Augen, kann man diesen mit Sicherheit auch leicht betrügen.

Young: Off the charts.
Johansen: Well, you could try looking farther afield.
Young: Maybe on the other side of that lake.
five by five – heißt soviel wie “Alles okay” und kommt aus dem Militär/Funker-Slang. Auf Funkgeräten gibt es zwei Anzeigen für Stärke und Klarheit des Signals, die jeweils fünf Streifen haben. Ist das Signal einwandfrei, stehen beide Anzeigen auf fünf, five by five bedeutet also “klar und deutlich”. Die Wikipedia sagt dazu:
‘Five by five’ (occasionally written “‘5 by 5″, “five-by-five” or “5-by-5″), by extension, has come to mean “I understand you perfectly” in situations other than radio communication. A further shortened form is “five by”. Post-World War II, the phrase “Loud and Clear” entered common usage with a similar meaning. [...]However, the “five bars” displayed on many cell phones does directly correlate to the signal strength rating.
